The “Bio-based industry and biorefineries” dashboard provides a visualisation of an extensive database of EU facilities producing different categories of bio-based products. This June, the JRC has released a new version of the dashboard with a renewed look, along with an update of some elements of the database. In addition, the former “Bio-based industry and biorefineries” dashboard and the “Chemical and material biorefineries in the EU” dashboard have been merged into a single dashboard, to provide full visibility of the EU bio-based plants.
The new dashboard update fulfils several objectives:
- Upgrade and modernisation of the original dashboard to the latest visualisation platform, making it more user friendly and introducing new charts and graphs.
- Integration of the two initial datasets to ensure a consistent collection of bio-based chemical biorefineries.
- Update of biomethane plants using the latest data from the European Biogas Association (EBA). Biomethane plants were updated to reflect the European Biomethane Map 2024.
- Update of plants completed under the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE-JU), a partnership between the EU and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) that funds projects within the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme.
The final updated dashboard consists of three pages (tabs):
- All plants: this page will replace the original “Bio-based industry and biorefineries” dashboard that includes the different categories of bio-based products.
- Selected chemical plants: this page will replace the “Chemical and material biorefineries in the EU” dashboard that focused on the biorefineries that produce bio-based chemicals and materials as main products.
- Selected chemical plants (global comparison): this page will replace the comparison between selected EU facilities and selected facilities outside of the EU that produce bio-based chemicals and materials as main products.
The database is accompanied by a report explaining all changes in detail. The report can be found here.
